Common Bakery — Hospitality

Fremantle | 125 sqm

Common Bakery, in a bustling student precinct, embraces warmth and nostalgia to create a set of welcoming, casual spaces that retains large portions of existing building fabric both original and recent. A monolithic, modest approach allows the craftsmanship of the artisanal pastries and baked goods to take centre stage. Soft Italian influences are subtly present throughout, with travertine and marble, and worn terracotta tiling – a homage to the southern European migrants that arrived after World War II leaving an indelible mark on the area.

The existing terracotta tiles set a warm foundation, travertine and textured plasterwork introduce tactility, cork elements enhance acoustics and toffee-toned mosaic tiles add a soft glow. These elements come together to form a wheaty, bread-inspired palette.

The display of homemade preserves and condiments is central to the bakery’s artisanal personality. This design speaks to the student population it serves, offering a nostalgic and approachable environment that celebrates the timeless appeal of fresh baked food.
